RUC at Queen's
The appearance of the RUC at the Queen's University Freshers
Bazaar at the end of last week has been described as insulting by
South Belfast Sinn Fein councillor Sean Hayes.
He said, ``the administration at Queen's has not grasped the
reality of the new political situation. The RUC has no place in
any new society. The involvement of the RUC, a force that has
been involved in the murder of Queen's students, in a charm
offensive should not be condoned by the Queen's student union,
they should not be providing political cover to such a
discredited force.''
Meanwhile SF councillor Michael Browne has condemned the decision
of St John the Baptist Primary School to invite the RUC to
address the primary class seven.
He said, ``attempts by the school to dress up a charm offensive by
the RUC as part of a pastoral care policy is grossly insulting.
In a bid to sow confusion amongst the parents the school failed
to mention the RUC at all in their letter to the parents.''
Browne added: ``The [school] Principal adopted an arrogant and
dismissive attitude to the concerns of my constituents. These
schools need to quickly realise that the RUC has delivered murder
and brutality upon the community in West Belfast, they have no
place in a civilised society let alone in primary schools.''
