Binlids - a roaring success in New York
Following its sell-out run in at the Angel Orsanz Foundation in
New York's Lower East Side, the play's director, Pam Brighton,
spoke to An Phoblacht.
``The play was greeted with critical acclaim by all the press in
New York, with the exception of the politically-motivated New
York Times.
``It appeared to have tremendous impact on the audience - Irish,
Irish-American and American. It also created a significant impact
not just in terms of press coverage but also radio and TV
coverage.
``We were wonderfully supported by a group of people in New York
who gave up their time for free to build, bartend and usher.
There was a huge hospitality shown by a number of New York's
Irish bars who gave free food and drink.
``For the women who went it was tremendous that they felt they
could come out to New York and hold their own.''
Director Pam Brighton also recieved an award from New York City
Council for her inspired leadership of Dubbeljoint and its
contribution to Irish American cultural life - at the start of a
three year exchange programme between New York and Belfast.
Sadly the `Northern Ireland' Arts Council felt this highly
acclaimed and important project was not worthy of their financial
support.
