Bloody Sunday hearings
The panel set up to investigate the Bloody Sunday
murders is due to make its opening statement a week on
Friday 3 April, at the Guildhall in Derry. The trio of
Lord Saville, New Zealander Sir Edward Somers and
Canadian William Hoyt will then hold a press conference
and visit the site of the killings. The full public
hearings of the inquiry are due to start at the
Guildhall in the Autumn.
Speaking to An Phoblacht Tony Doherty of the Bloody
Sunday Justice Campaign, whose father Patrick was
killed on Bloody Sunday, said he welcomed the fact that
the inquiry was taking place, but added that the
relatives are still waiting for the terms of reference
of the inquiry to be spelt out.
``Under the Tribunal of Inquiry (1921 Act) the inquiry
team can summon anyone to give evidence, but this is a
discretionary power. We have to wait and see just who
will be called. The inquiry has to be meaningful 14
people were killed and we have to get the truth of
that,'' he said.
