SF workshop for International Women's Day
Women from Kurdistan, Germany and Britain joined with
various women's groups from across Ireland, justice
groups and Sinn Féin women from Monaghan, Cavan,
Donegal and Dublin in Fermanagh to celebrate
International Women's Day on the weekend before last.
During the day a series of workshops were run by Sinn
Féin's womens department and focused on topics such as
sectarian murders, harassment, border roads, Orange
marches and the talks process.
The workshops were addressed by local women's groups,
FARM, the Garvaghy Road Residents Association,
residents of Newtownbutler and Roslea, local Sinn Fein
councillors Ruth Lynch and Geraldine Cassidy and
Michele Gildernew from Sinn Fein's International
Department.
Diane Hamill spoke of the murder of her brother Robert
in Portadown last year and the subsequent release of
five of the six loyalists charged with the killing.
Lurgan solicitor Rosemary Nelson spoke about the
campaign of intimidation and death threats against her.
The Kurdish women spoke of their continued struggle for
recognition against the ``tyranny of hostile
governments'' and the participation of women in the
struggle for liberation.
