Over two-and-half million voters go to the polls in the 26-County
general election.
Parties supporting the country's military win an overall majority
in the Algerian general election.
Saturday 7 June
Sinn Féin wins its first Leinster House seat in over 40 years,
with Caoimhghín O Caoláin topping the poll in Cavan/Monaghan. In
the other constituencies in which they stood, Sinn Féin vote more
than doubles. Labour and PDs votes collapse.
Clashes take place between the RUC and loyalist protestors after
loyalists try to burn down the Catholic Church in Harryville.

The British Conservative Party begins its first round of voting
to elect a new leader to replace John Major.
Tuesday 10 June
Fianna Fáil and Progressive Democrat representatives meet in
Dublin to begin talks on the formation of a new administration in
the 26 Counties.
The IRA's Derry Brigade carry out a gun attack on a British Army
vehicle in the city.
The British MoD has admitted using faulty plastic bullets in the
Six Counties.
